Details

This guide is based on our old Wester Ross: Shorter Routes and Longer Routes guides, but with everything rewalked and with new routes added. In particular, the area covered by the guide has been expanded and now covers not only the southern half of Wester Ross (ie, between Torridon and Loch Carron), but also Lochalsh to the south. This brings in additional walks around Kyle of Lochalsh, Plockton and Glenelg. The walking in Wester Ross scarcely needs recommendation - it is amongst the finest in Scotland. There are wonderful moorland paths through the vast, rocky Torridon hills (this guide avoids the peaks: the Wester Ross summits are more for climbers than walkers) and superb walks through the dramatic coastal scenery around Torridon, Applecross and Loch Carron. Highlights include the climb to the stunning Loch Coire Mnic Fhearchair and the short routes around Applecross House. In the new areas, the picturesque village of Plockton is a surprisingly good walking centre, with miles of good paths through the woods and low hills to the south, while Glenelg has the attraction of walks passing some of Scotland's finest remaining brochs (cylindrical Iron Age forts) and the site of the house made famous by Gavin Maxwell's Ring of Bright Water. Further east, the sight of Eilean Donan Castle, approached from the hills to the east, is memorable. The publication of the Wester Ross guides completes our coverage of the northern Scottish mainland in this series. Every area has its charms, but for consistently terrific walking Wester Ross/Lochalsh is tough to beat.Part of a popular series of A6 pocket walking guides which describe routes which are suitable for walkers of all abilities and to suit all tastes. Route descriptions are accompanied by 2-colour sketch maps. The guides are illustrated with line illustrations, and will provide walkers with a good introduction to what each area covered has to offer.
