Product Description

Across much of Scotland's countryside one can discover the remains of old abandoned communities—places where in the past people lived, worked hard and played. These villages were often established near to where employment was to be had, often in coalmines, and as a result c0uld be found in the most remote and obscure places.

Other communities simply waned over the years, their original industries and markets declining, the residents moving elsewhere in search of work. A few communities were killed off by natural disasters, such as the blowing of sand, whereas a few were removed by design, landowners wishing to ‘improve' their policies.

Life in the villages, which varied from single rows of 'workmen's cottages' to larger communities such as Haywood, which had a population of 1,200 at one time, was often hard. Mineworkers could only buy their provisions from the company store, and wives waited each day to make sure their husbands returned home from their day's work underground.

This book ensures that the story of forty of Scotland's lost communities is not forgotten. Details of each village is included, as well as tales from the terraces, accounts of struggles endured and references to some famous sons. Illustrated with detailed maps and old photographs, the reader will love discovering how many of our ancestors lived.
