Details

Towards the end of the 1850s there were nearly 500 young men living in Kingston and Surbiton described on the census as apprentices, boarders, lodgers or servants, a third being under twenty years of age. Many of these young people laboured more than fifteen hours a day, and as they lived in the building where they worked, they rarely saw daylight except on a Sunday. It was said of Kingston that it still clung to the customs of the dark ages. Even in 1866, one young man referred to himself as a 'white slave'. Help came initially with an invitation to take coffee in a local church vestry, and thereby an Association for young men came into being that later found itself at the hub of nineteenth century life in Kingston and Surbiton. This book considers both the changing pattern of belief following the Darwinian theory of evolution, and the town s reaction to the Early Closing Movement. It also maps the gradual awareness that adequate provision for the well-being of the young must include not only spiritual but also mental, social and physical activities. The aim has been to provide a book that is not in praise of every aspect of the young men s association, but a truthful account of the life experiences of the membership, failures as well as success, disagreements as well as harmony.
